Acute Undifferentiated Leukaemia (AUL): diagnosis


To diagnose acute undifferentiated leukaemia the cells need to meet specific criteria, and possible alternatives should be excluded. These are given in the table below:

Requirement 1
Lineage can be assigned by lineage-defining markers of any lineage

Lineage defining myeloid markers should not be expressed Review criteria for myeloid-lineage assgnment
Lineage defining B-lymphoid markers should not be expressed Review criteria for B-lymphoid lineage assgnment
Lineage defining T-lymphoid markers should not be expressed Review criteria for T-lymphoid lineage assgnment
Requirement 2
Ensure that other conditions that may resemble undifferentiated acute leukaemia are excluded: particularly consider whether marker patterns suggest any of the following:

Consider whether the case may be better described as Acute Leukaemia of Ambiguous Lineage - not otherwise specified (ALAL-NOS) - see guidance
