Summary
CD235 or glycophorin A is detectable on erythroid precursor cells from an early stage in maturation and has strongest expression on late normoblast cells and is is useful though not fully reliable in recognising erythroid lineage in AML

Diagnostic Use
  • CD235 is is a useful marker of AML with erythroid differentiation
  • Expression may be absent in less mature cases of erythroleukaemia (in those cases CD71 or CD36 may be used to detect earlier erythroblasts, however both CD71 or CD36 have recognised expression on other leukaemia types and in the case of CD71 also on proliferating cells)
