Gene affected:
ERBB3 is a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR/ERBB) family of receptor tyrosine kinases (the family are named from the viral oncogene product, erb-B, of the erythroblastoma virus)

Clinical significance
An uncommon mutated protein in lymphoma (1%) whose significance is unclear at present

Function of gene

Following ligand-binding, ErbB3 forms heterodimers with other ErbB family members, the heterodimer with ErbB2 for example generates signals that promote the growth, proliferation, motility and chemotherapeutic resistance of cells. Unlike family members ErbB3 is “kinase impaired” having no ability to phosphorylate other proteins itself, but instead activates its binding partners.
