Major features: Blast are medium sized with basophilic cytoplasm. The nucleus is primitive and is most often offset because of the golgi body (visible as a plae area adjacent to the nucleus). Granulation may be indistinct or obvious and involve >10% of cells, granules may coalesce and form one or more masses and Auer rods are frequently present.

Other aspects: In some cases there may be maturation to form mature neutrophils (although most often these have atypical appearance) and may form eosinophils or basophils. There is a frequent occurrence of the t[8.21] chromosomal translocation in this group and these cases may have relatively specific additional features (see separate description in the associated images).
